Mr. Nakagawa was born in Tokyo in
1947. He began to take flute lessons from Ms. Ririko Hayashi while he
was a junior high school student. Upon graduation from the Music High
School, he entered Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music
in 1965 and graduated with a bachelor of fine arts and music in 1969.
Mr. Nakagawa began his professional career after graduation, and studied
flute under internationally known players such as Takeshi Koizumi, Ryu
Noguchi, Jan Pierre Rampal and Andras Adjorijan.
In 1977 Mr. Nakagawa won the second prize in Pan Music International
Contemporary Music Festival and he was also awarded the finest prestigious
Kenzo Nakajima Prize as a member of the new group, Ensemble Vent D'
Oriont.
In 1978 he premiered in Japan at the Isang Yun flute concert, with favorable
reviews from both professional critics and the general public. Mr. Nakagawa
has toured overseas since 1978. In France he participated in the La
Rochelle Inter0nationale Contemporary Music Festival and, in 1993, he
was invited to Mexico to give a recital featuring only Japanese music
at the Festival de Musica de Japon and successfully introduced contemporary
Japanese music there. In 1992 he Introduced Jazz flute praying in Korea
and has since been invited back to perform in several jazz concerts.
He has appeared in recitals at the Leo S. Bing Theater and the Huntington
Beach Library and Cultural Center.
He participated in Jazz Fest India in 2001 and was also invited to play
in several concerts in Sweden.
Mr. Nakagawaユs rather unique musical activities and wide ranging repertoire
was showcased with appearances as a soloist in classical concerts with
the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Gunma
Symphony Orchestra, Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra
and Sinsei Nippon Symphony Orchestra.
He has played jazz with well known bands and musicians; Gil Evans Orchestra,
Masahiko Togashi Quartet, Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, Yuji Ohno & Explosion
Band, Masahiko Sato & Saifa , Warren Smith, Keith Jarrett, Eddie
Gomez, Eddie Daniels, Steve Gadd, Richie Beriach, George Mraz. Lee Konitz,
Richard Davis, Don Friedman, Joe Chambers, Richard Stoltzman & Yo
Yo Ma. He also studied the essence of jazz with Mr. Sadao Watanabe and
Mr. Masahiko Sato. He taught at the flute department of Music Course
at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and Toho Gakuen
College of Music. In 1995 Mr. Nakagawa was invited to open a flute master
class at the National Art Academy In Korea.
In his native Japan, he has appeared in Gen-On Ten, Music Today produced
by late Mr. Toru Takemitsu, Inter link Festival and popular television
programs such at Modern Music and Art Theater. Mr. Nakagawa has introduced
a number of works by Japanese composers in the recitals focusing on
contemporary music. He recently he appeared on television and radio
shows including jazz programs and introduction to the flute for kids.
In 1991 he studied in the United States under the Asian Artist Exchange
Program and in 1993. appeared in two successful recitals on two consecutive
nights- Classic Music Night and jazz Music Night.
